Advice When Treating Hyperthyroidism

Please be careful when eating, and avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, chocolate and cola as much as possible.

Avoid caffeine in the treatment of Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism)

Since gluten is similar in structure to thyroid proteins and is more likely to cause an immune response, foods containing gluten (flour, barley, oats, rye) should be avoided as much as possible.

Next is the intake of seaweed , which contains a lot of iodine . Taking a large amount of iodine can block thyroid function for a period of 1-2 weeks. However, after that, the thyroid function returns to the original hypersecretion state and it is difficult to control the symptoms, so please do not ingest large amounts of seaweed.

Foods that we would like to eat actively are berries rich in bioflavonoids, carrots, tomatoes and pumpkins rich in carotenoids . In Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism), large amounts of free radicals are generated due to accelerated metabolism. If you leave these free radicals, it will cause various problems. Bioflavonoids and carotenoids have strong antioxidant effects, neutralize free radicals, and reduce damage to the body. The vitamin C is also one of the effective means to take antioxidants from supplements such as.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON THYROID GLANDS

Is thyroid disorders common in society?

Yes, it is by far the commonest endocrine disorder in the community. It affects around 15-20 % of our population. These disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid nodules. Women seem to be more prone to thyroid disorders.

What causes thyroid disorders?
It is mainly due to a disorder of the immune system (which serves to protect our body) resulting in the destruction of the thyroid gland. The destruction which leads to permanent hypothyroidism and requires life long treatment. The immune system can also stimulate the gland to produce hyperthyroidism. In 30- 40 % of these people, remission of the disease is possible with medical treatment.

Does thyroid dysfunction have anything to do with diet?
Food groups ( especially the brassica family of vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli) should be avoided in iodine-deficient areas where endemic goiter is prevalent (your doctor can be consulted on this issue).

Whether or not there is confirmation of being hyperthyroid by medical tests, intervening on nutrition is certainly the first thing you can do to improve health and remove the possibility of incurring this pathology.

Let's see some winning strategies to be adopted to remove the risk of thyroid problems and more generally to live better:

Learn to manage stress

Proactive stress management

Numerous studies conducted on animals and humans have shown that high levels of stress increase the possibility of triggering autoimmune responses from the immune system.

Stress, in fact, causes changes, both physically and psychologically, which impact heavily on the functioning of the immune system causing a series of neuroendocrine alterations that lead to autoimmune disorders and damage to organs and tissues.

Furthermore, stress raises the level of cortisol in the blood (cortisol is in fact defined as the "stress hormone") causing disturbance to the functioning of neurotransmitters and worsening the symptoms of thyroid disorders.

To avoid all this engage in stress-free activities: dedicated to a ' work for you especially nice, you exercise moderately, practice meditation, spend time in contact with nature whenever and wherever possible, make of massage, use the essential oils even consider the idea of making the volunteer.

Follow an anti-inflammatory diet

Anti-Inflammatory Diet & Pyramid | Nutrition | Andrew Weil, M.D.

Adopting a diet that reduces systemic inflammation is one of the most effective ways to normalize the functionality of the immune system and create a healthy environment in the intestine and consequently to improve the health of the intestinal microbiota which is closely related to the level of the general health of the organism.

One of the ways in which a wrong diet can cause autoimmune responses is to frequently consume allergen-containing foods such as milk and dairy products and anything that contains gluten, because the body perceives these substances as a threat when they cannot. be properly digested and assimilated.

Allergens contribute over time to the onset of intestinal permeability, that is, the internal tissue of the intestine is progressively attacked and damaged until it literally becomes a "colander" that allows substances that should instead remain inside the intestine to enter the bloodstream. possibly be eliminated.

This continuous flow of harmful substances ends up poisoning the blood, and therefore the whole organism, triggering autoimmune chain responses.

From what has been said so far we have understood that it is important to adopt a diet that does not make the immune system "angry" and does not damage the intestine.

AVOID CERTAIN FOODS

What is Gluten?

  • Gluten (therefore eliminate all products made with cereal flours that are not naturally gluten-free, in particular wheat and wheat which are the ones that contain the highest percentage)
  • Artificial flavors, additives, dyes, (generally avoid industrial packaged foods, frozen ready meals, etc.,)
  • Sugars (also cane sugar which is no less harmful than white sugar, corn syrups, agave, fructose, etc.)
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Foods that contain GMOs
  • Coffee and drinks that contain caffeine

It is also important to eliminate iodine-containing foods such as iodized salt, egg yolk and seaweed.

Foods to be preferred

Fresh Fruits Online | Fresh Vegetables Online | Fresh Produce Shoppe

  • Fresh vegetables , preferably eaten after light cooking (e.g. steamed or sauteed), which provides nutrients and helps fight inflammation.
If you are not cold-oriented, you can also occasionally consume vegetable juices as long as they are obtained with a low-speed extractor.
The plant belonging to the family Brassicaceae or crucifers that cabbagebroccoliturnipsradishesBrussels sproutskale or cabbage, cauliflowercabbagewatercress and rocket which are not recommended in case of hypothyroidism as they contain substances that interfere with the absorption of iodine and therefore slow down the thyroid, precisely for this reason they can instead be useful in case of hyperthyroidism, however, without abusing it and to be consumed always after cooking.
  • Fresh fruit to be consumed in moderate quantities given its sugar content and preferably in a hot or in any case never cold version of the refrigerator (on the Energy Training website you can find recipes to prepare delicious fruit salads cooked).
Give preference to low-sugar fruits such as berries, blueberries, strawberries, apples, pears, apricots and raspberries.
Absolutely to avoid the industrial fruit juices that as a result of pasteurization lose the fiber content (which in the untreated fruit among other things slows down the absorption of sugar in the blood at the moment of consumption) and vitamins leaving a product consisting only of sugars and nutrient-free.
  • Herbs and flavors with anti-inflammatory properties such as basil, parsley, rosemary and oregano
  • Spices such as turmeric, cumin, ginger, cardamom, fennel, coriander which stimulate digestion and help normalize the activity of the immune system
  • The bone broth which helps to repair the intestinal tissue and detoxify the body.

Exercise daily

Exercising every day is a great way to reduce stress and inflammation as long as it is pleasant and not over the top.

Overtraining is, in fact, likely to increase the level of stress and anxiety and to consume precious vital energy.

The best activities are swimmingdancingwalkingcyclingyoga, and some martial arts such as tai chi and qi gong.

Another excellent reason to adopt a nutrient-rich diet and to exercise moderately is to keep the bones healthy which is particularly difficult in case of hyperthyroidism.

The high levels of thyroid hormones present in the body interfere with the body's normal ability to absorb calcium and other minerals important for keeping bones strong and healthy.

Stop smoking

Exposure to cigarette smoketobacco, and other so-called "recreational" drugs has been shown to trigger the body's autoimmune responses including Graves' disease.

It is not yet known exactly how this occurs but it is possible that the high level of toxins present in cigarette smoke (and in other drugs) considerably increases inflammation and damages cells, consequently triggering the response of the immune system that begins to produce. an increasing number of T lymphocytes.

Limit your exposure to toxic products

These are chemical agents found in common household cleaning products, in cosmetics, in sprays or diffusers of any type (hair lacquers and gels, air fresheners, scented candles, and low-quality incense, etc.), in perfumes, medicines, antibiotics, birth control pills.

To this are added also the substances dissolved in drinking water, fluorine and chlorine in primis, which alter the functioning of the thyroid.

Exposure to these substances should be avoided or limited by using natural products, including homemade ones, as much as possible (there are endless resources available on the web to produce home cleaners, cosmetics, toothpastes, soaps, etc.) or purchased production as natural and organic as possible.

Avoid taking drugs that are not strictly necessary and drink good quality filtered water and therefore free of toxic substances.

Use relaxing music and sounds when working or exercising

Whenever you dedicate yourself to physical exercise and, if possible, even in the workplace, listen to relaxing music and sounds such as natural environmental sounds (for example rain, the sound of the sea, the crackling of fire, etc.), or music for meditation and relaxation.

These sounds and music help to reduce stress and anxiety . they induce calm and promote concentration , relaxation and learning .

Essential oils for hyperthyroidism

Several essential oils can be of help to counteract the symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as, for example, the ' oil of frankincense and of myrrh oil that reduce stress and improve thyroid function.

Apply twice a day 2 drops of frankincense on the palate and 2-3 drops of myrrh directly on the neck in correspondence with the thyroid.

Other useful oils are:

  • For anxiety : bergamot, lavender, lemon balm, rose, jasmine, cedar
  • For depression : chamomile, geranium, lavender, jasmine, bergamot, neroli, mint, basil
  • For stress : rose, lemon, jasmine, fennel, hyssop, geranium, sandalwood, neroli
  • For anger and aggression : ylang-ylang, chamomile, cedar, lemon balm, rose
  • To promote sleep : lemon balm, lavender, geranium, neroli, rose, orange, cedar

The essential oils can be diluted in a few drops of alcohol or in vegetable oils and applied directly on the wrists or on the points of greatest blood supply (for example the temples), or spread at home by placing them in the humidifiers of the radiators or with the use of diffusers of essences (in this case always put a little water in the diffuser to which to add the selected oils) or inhaled directly from the bottle.

HYPERTHYROIDISM: CAUSES AND NATURAL REMEDIES

By On 15/06/2020

WHAT IS HYPERTHYROIDISM?

Thyroid symptoms in men: Yes, thyroid can affect men as well!

It is a disorder of the thyroid much less widespread than hypothyroidism which can cause the affected person important disturbances affecting the metabolismnervous system, and heart.

It affects women more frequently and occurs mainly in adulthood, between 40 and 60 years of age, but can also arise in other stages of life

The most common type of hyperthyroidism is an autoimmune disorder known by the name of Graves' disease - Graves' disease or widespread toxic goiter.

In this disease the body produces an antibody called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin which has a behavior similar to the thyroid-stimulating hormone TSH (a hormone produced by the pituitary that serves precisely to stimulate the thyroid to produce its own hormones and which is normally high in those affected by hypothyroidism); the IST overestimates the gland and causes excessive production of thyroid hormones.

Are you a victim of hyperthyroidism? You are experiencing uncontrollable weight loss? You are unable to carry on with your activities normally? Try this herbal tea.

Can thyroid disorders cause weight gain?

The short answer is: yes and no. The relationship between your weight and your thyroid is complex. While it’s true that an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is associated with weight loss and an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is associated with weight gain, it’s far too easy to blame your thyroid for the numbers on the scale.

If you’ve gained more than 10 pounds of unwanted weight, the issue is probably farther reaching than your thyroid. “Hypothyroidism sufferers typically gain 6 to 10 pounds of water weight due to fluid retention, and this goes away when corrected,” explains Dr. Cornea. “However, you don’t typically see any more than this.”

Bottom line: if you’ve been struggling to lose weight, your thyroid levels could be worth checking. However, if your numbers come back normal, be wary about asking for thyroid medication. For one, it won’t help you lose weight. But beyond that, it can put your health at significant risk. “Taking thyroid medication when you don’t need it is a very dangerous thing. It’s very bad for the heart and bones,” says Dr. Khan. “There are so many misconceptions out there about the thyroid. If there is one thing I would love people to understand it is that you can’t use thyroid medications to lose weight or gain more energy.”

When should you get your thyroid levels checked?

Sometimes, routine bloodwork will include screening for thyroid disease. However, in most cases, thyroid levels are only checked when a person has symptoms or a family history of thyroid disease or autoimmune disease.

The good news is, diagnosing thyroid disease is easy. Your primary care physician or endocrinologist will begin by reviewing your symptoms, medical and family history, and risk factors. He or she will then conduct a physical exam.

If your symptoms and health profile warrant further testing, your doctor will order blood tests to check your thyroid hormone levels. “In most cases, a doctor will only run one test – TSH,” says Dr. Khan. “TSH is the most sensitive test of thyroid function. Unless TSH is abnormal there is usually no need to continue testing.”

In some incidences, a doctor may also test levels of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). If this test result also comes back normal, you can be confident your thyroid is functioning correctly. “If you have normal TSH and T4, you can rest assured that you do not have a functional thyroid disorder,” says Dr. Cornea.

The causes of hyperthyroidism

There are several factors that contribute to the onset of hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease - Graves, among the main causes we find:

  • Intestinal permeability
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • intoxication
  • Food allergy

A further possible cause of hyperthyroidism is also nodular goiter, i.e. an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid which pushes the gland to produce excess thyroid hormones.

Even thyroiditis, ie thyroid inflammation caused by a viral infection that has put a strain on the immune system, can cause temporary symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Another possible cause is an excessive iodine supplementation, not so much through diet as by taking supplements or medicines that contain it, which can cause goiter and exacerbate problems already present in the thyroid.

Hereditary factors, gender, and type 1 diabetes, excessive thyroid hormone intake can be counted among the risk factors of hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism may occur for many reasons, such as Graves' disease, inflammation of the thyroid gland, or thyroid cancer. Consuming too much iodine can also trigger this disease. To briefly look at the factors in the occurrence of this disease:

Graves' Disease:  This autoimmune disorder is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. With Graves' disease, your body attacks healthy thyroid tissues, causing it to work excessively. This can also lead to graves' ophthalmopathy, which affects the tissues and muscles behind the eyes.

thyroiditis: Also known as an inflamed (swollen) thyroid gland, thyroiditis may occur after a serious illness and its effects may be temporary. Women are at a higher risk of thyroiditis in the year following their pregnancy.

Goiter: Goiter is the most common enlarged thyroid gland in hypothyroidism. However, thyroid enlargement may also be associated with hyperthyroidism.

Thyroid Nodules:  Nodules are small non-cancerous cysts. These lumps on the thyroid can become “toxic”, which means they produce too much thyroid hormone. This can lead to hyperthyroidism over time.

Natural remedies to treat hyperthyroidism

6 Herbal Remedies to Ease Your Thyroid Pain

In addition to intervening on nutrition and lifestyle we see what are the natural remedies that can be useful for treating hyperthyroidism:

  • L-Carnitine, clinical studies have shown that an intake of 2 to 4 gr/day is effective for countering the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
  • Ashwagandha, it is an adaptogenic plant widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Since it has the ability to adapt to the conditions in which the organism is found and to work in synergy with it to bring it back into balance, ashwagandha can be useful both in case of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
  • Bugle, this plant contains substances that help prevent damage to the thyroid gland
  • Valerian and passionflower , useful for rebalancing sleep
  • Melissa prevents antibodies from attaching to the thyroid
  • B vitamins , help to reduce the symptoms of hyperthyroidism
  • Plant sterols help to rebalance the immune system

Even if these are natural remedies, the "do it yourself" is always not recommended unless you have herbal and nutritional knowledge so, before taking the remedies listed above, it is always better to consult with a naturopath and with the doctor also to evaluate the possible interactions with any medications being taken.

EXTRA TIPS: HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A DIET YOU SHOULD FOLLOW

  • Consume fresh fruits in moderate quantities given its sugar content and preferably in a hot or in any case never cold version of the refrigerator (on the Energy Training website you can find recipes to prepare delicious fruit salads cooked).

6 POWERFUL HERBS TO FIGHT AGAINST HYPERTHYROIDISM

By On 15/06/2020

Alexander Perkelvald, MD, PC., Call Us (718) 368 3333

If I have a thyroid lump, does that mean I have thyroid cancer?

Having a thyroid lump does not mean you have thyroid cancer. In fact, 95% of thyroid lumps are benign (non-cancerous). Most of the time, these lumps can be followed on a routine basis, without the need for surgery.

I have a thyroid nodule. What kind of tests can I expect to have?

Our endocrinology team will check the lump to see if it is cancerous. Your doctor will take a detailed medical history and do a careful physical exam. They may also do an ultrasound exam in the office or send you to a radiologist to do the ultrasound. Lab work is also done and, if needed, a tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken.

What if I have thyroid cancer?

The treatment for thyroid cancer is to remove the thyroid gland, which is called a thyroidectomy. In many cases the whole thyroid needs to be removed (total thyroidectomy), and the lymph nodes surrounding the thyroid may be removed at the same time. In some cases only part of the thyroid gland needs to be removed. We use the most advanced surgical techniques to help keep the quality of your voice and decrease bleeding and operation time. After surgery, you may get radioactive iodine treatment to take care of any small amounts of remaining thyroid cancer.

What factors increase the risk of a thyroid disorder?

If you are reading this and you are a male, thank your lucky stars because women are 5 to 8 times more likely to develop thyroid disease. The reasons for this gender disparity aren’t known. However, some researchers attribute it to changes that occur in the immune system during pregnancy and delivery.

How do you keep your thyroid healthy?

While it’s always a good idea to exercise, keep a healthy weight, and manage stress, to maintain overall good health, these factors typically do not have a direct effect on your thyroid.

One lifestyle factor that can directly affect your thyroid, however, is your iodine consumption. Since the thyroid relies on iodine to produce T3 and T4, regular iodine consumption is critical for thyroid health. A century ago, iodine deficiency was a common problem in the U.S. – and it continues to be an issue worldwide. However, thanks to the introduction of iodized salt and fortified flours in the 1920s, iodine deficiency is typically no longer an issue in the Western World.

“Unless someone isn’t eating any salt or bread products, or is confining themselves to foods made with exotic salts like sea salt, it’s not a problem anymore,” says Dr. Khan.

Lemon balm

Melissa (plant) - Wikipedia
The doctors of antiquity recommended it for anxiety and for all problems of emotional or nervous origin, from palpitations to insomnia, from melancholia to gastro-enteric and premenstrual disorders. Modern pharmacology has confirmed its specific action on the thyroid, in addition to its powerful antispasmodic action and efficacy in all disorders of the neurovegetative system. In fact, laboratory research has shown that lemon balm has the power to inhibit the activity of this gland by interfering with thyrotropin, a pituitary hormone that stimulates the production of specific thyroid hormones.

How to use: 5 drops of Quintessence spagyrica of lemon balm diluted in a little water twice a day, between meals: at 10 and 17.

Lycopus europaeus

The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the neck, in the center of the throat, in front of the larynx and trachea. Butterfly-shaped, it is formed by two lateral lobes connected by a thin isthmus and has the task of producing thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) , iodine-based compounds, based on the input sent by the hormone thyroid gland ( TSH ) produced by the pituitary gland, in addition to calcitonin which is a hormone produced by the parafollicular cells ( C cells ) of the thyroid, which takes part in the metabolism of calcium.

What are the Factors that alter thyroid function?

Viral infections, inflammations and intoxications are among the factors that can determine the appearance of thyroiditis.

The most important intoxicating factors are: drugs such as lithium salts, anti-acidity drugs (aluminum hydroxide), those against cholesterol, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and numerous others, but also the excessive intake of iodine (including that contained in algae such as Fucus) which can stress the thyroid gland to the point of functional collapse.

Is There a Link Between Thyroid Cancer and Hyperthyroidism?

Graves' disease | womenshealth.gov

Patients with Graves’ disease are at higher risk for thyroid cancer compared with patients with diffuse goiter, evidence suggests. In one study, thyroid cancers were found in 22.2% of patients with thyroid nodules in Graves’ goiters compared with 2.9% percent of patients with diffuse toxic goiter with no nodules. In addition, Graves’ disease appears to be linked with larger, multifocal, and potentially more aggressive thyroid cancer rather than multinodular toxic goiter or single hot nodules, the authors noted.
