The prostate gland is an extremely important component of men's health. The very word "prostate" is of Greek origin and literally means "in front" or "protector". The main function of the prostate, located between the bladder and intestines, is the release of a transparent alkaline fluid that facilitates the movement of sperm during ejaculation. The alkaline composition helps to neutralize the acidity of the vagina, protecting sperm and increasing the chances of fertilization.

The prostate can become infected, and this disease is called prostatitis. An enlarged prostate is called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). If cancer cells are found in the prostate gland, prostate cancer is diagnosed.

Prostatitis

Bacteria can invade the prostate and cause an infection, which in most cases is symptomatic similar to a urinary tract infection. A man suffering from  prostatitis will notice an acute difficulty in urinating, and sometimes also a burning sensation and difficulty in emptying the bladder. Treatment usually includes a course of antibiotics lasting from two to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the disease.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

With age, the prostate gland in many men increases. Patients with BPH may notice difficulty urinating, many have the urge to urinate and go to the toilet up to five times a night. Symptoms may also include difficulty starting urination and leakage of urine after urination. Obviously, the need to get up several times a night greatly interferes with sound healthy sleep. Fortunately, something can be done to minimize prostate enlargement.

From a lifestyle point of view, eating healthy foods such as whole grains and organic fruits and vegetables is good. It is recommended (and it will be useful for someone) to avoid caffeine and alcohol, or at least minimize their use. They also take prescription and non-medications. These include 5HT reductase inhibitors (finasteride, duasteride) and vasodilators (terazosin, doxazosin, tamsulosin). In most cases, these drugs help quite well against diseases of the prostate gland. Like all medicines, these medicines have side effects that can make someone stop taking them.

Those who have tried different strategies and, despite this, continue to experience difficulties may need to resort to surgical intervention. However, side effects of surgery can lead to urinary incontinence, irreversible impotence, and erectile dysfunction.

Given the widespread prevalence of BPH, there is good news: there is no evidence that this disease increases the risk of developing prostate cancer. At the same time, it is not always necessary to drink medicines - there are supplements that can also help reduce the volume of the prostate gland.

Prostate cancer

One in six men has prostate cancer. This disease accounts for 10% of all cancer deaths. Worldwide , prostate cancer has been diagnosed in 1.6 million men. Each year, 366,000 men die from prostate cancer. This disease is so common that when examined under a microscope, prostate cancer is detected in approximately 90% of men over 90 years of age. However, it is unlikely that he will cause death in men in this age group - such death simply does not have time to occur. Rather, death will be caused by diseases of the cardiovascular system and natural causes.

If you ask most men over 50 how the prostate is examined, they will tell you, usually with a cautious, frightened look or a grin on their face. You can, of course, take a blood test for a prostate-specific antigen (PSA), but the doctor’s gloved index finger remains the best way to check the prostate for the risk of developing prostate cancer. If the doctor finds a tumor node or something unusual, he may order an ultrasound of the prostate and a biopsy to rule out the presence of cancer cells.

This test may be uncomfortable, but it is necessary for the physical health of those who are at risk for developing prostate cancer or have symptoms of the disease.

What foods should be avoided

What should be avoided?

Dairy products, including milk, are considered a risk factor for prostate cancer. In a 2018 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists concluded that consuming whole milk was associated with an increased risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. The authors of another study in 2018 draw the following conclusion: “... the consumption of whole milk after diagnosis of prostate cancer was associated with an increased risk of relapse, especially among men who are overweight or obese. Men with prostate cancer who do not want to give up milk should choose low-fat or non-fat types of milk. ” I recommend non-dairy milk substitutes, such as almond or rice milk.

A 2017 study found that men who consume the most saturated fats are also at increased risk for prostate cancer. Saturated fats are found in foods such as butter, cream, milk, cheese, lard, and processed meats (sausages).

Lycopene

Lycopene is a food nutrient that is good for the prostate. Lycopene is present in foods such as tomatoes, watermelon and grapefruit. A 2018 nutrient study concluded that Vietnamese men who consume more tomatoes and lycopene are less likely to get prostate cancer. The authors of the 2017 meta-analytic study, which involved 692,000 men, concluded that men with higher levels of lycopene in the blood are less likely to develop prostate cancer, and finally, a study in 2018 showed that men those who consumed a lot of tomatoes were 19% less likely to develop prostate cancer compared to those who ate fewer tomatoes. Recommended Dosage: Take as directed on the label.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil)

Omega 3 fatty acids consist primarily of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). According to a 2014 study published in the Nutrition Journal, most Americans do not consume enough essential omega 3 fatty acids. These acids are found in a variety of foods, including fish (most found in mackerel, cod and salmon), walnuts , with Yemen chia , flax seed , hemp seed and soy cheese .

A 2017 study published in the Oncology Letter reports that increasing consumption of omega 3 fatty acids reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Another 2017 study showed that men taking medications (finasteride and tamsulosin) for enlarged prostate gland or BPH and omega 3 fatty acids improved urine outflow compared to men who took only medication.

Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin is a "relative" of zucchini and belongs to the class of melons and gourds of the genus pumpkin. Pumpkin over the centuries ( pumpkin dominance began more than 7,000 years ago in the region where southern Mexico is now located ) was considered beneficial for the bladder, kidneys and prostate. Modern science confirms that this plant has beneficial properties that positively affect the health of the prostate gland.

2016 studies have shown that pumpkin seed extract can help improve symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate gland. A 2015 study involving patients with an enlarged prostate gland showed that those taking pumpkin seed extract improved urine outflow compared to those taking placebo tablets. Pumpkin seeds can be considered a useful snack. If you are taking them as a dietary supplement, follow the instructions on the label.

Serenoy

With age, many men experience symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate, a disease that doctors call BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Symptoms include difficulty in emptying the bladder, leakage of urine, decreased outflow of urine, and frequent urination. There are medications to reduce symptoms, however, many prefer a more natural approach to treatment. Serena ( Serenoa repens ) is a herbal medicine that studies have shown may be helpful.

A 2002 study by Cochrane Database led scientists to conclude that selenium has a mild to moderate effect on the symptoms of the excretory system and can improve urine outflow. In contrast to these data, a 2009 study showed that pure selenium is no more effective than placebo.

However, a 2017 study, which lasted 12 months, showed the beneficial effects of serenium on urination in those who took it, compared with those who did not. There are also studies that show that selenium combined with selenium and lycopene is more effective than selenium alone. I noticed that about half of the patients I recommend this plant report improvement in symptoms from the prostate gland. There is also evidence that patients taking serenium along with the finasteride prescribed by the doctor receive additional benefits.

Recommended dosage: as indicated on the label

Vitamin E

Products containing vitamin E have a beneficial effect not only on the brain and heart, but also on the prostate gland. Some of these products include almonds , pumpkin seeds , sunflower seeds , spinach, cabbage and avocado. A 2015 study found that those who consume more foods with vitamin E have a lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer.

Vitamin D

Studies have shown that men with lower levels of vitamin D  in their blood are at increased risk of developing prostate cancer and other cancers. In addition, a 2017 study published by Urology Annals found that men with lower levels of vitamin D in their blood have an increased risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia and possibly prostate cancer.

If you spend 20-30 minutes in the sun, exposing your arms and legs under the sun, in most cases this can help the body independently produce a sufficient amount of vitamin D. However, depending on the season and climatic zone, even this may not be enough. Most people are advised to take vitamin D supplements. Recommended dosage: 1000-5000 IU daily.

Zinc

According to the Journal of Nutrition, nearly 45% of Americans are deficient in zinc. Worldwide, more than 15% of people are deficient in zinc. Zinc seems to play an important role in enhancing the overall health of the prostate gland, and men with a healthy prostate gland have higher levels of zinc in their blood compared to those with prostate diseases.

According to a study published in 2011 in the Indian Journal of Urology, people with lower blood zinc levels are at a higher risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. 2016 studies, in addition to other studies, have confirmed the important role that normal blood zinc levels play in maintaining optimal prostate health. Quality multivitamins contain zinc. Someone prefers to take zinc separately as a dietary supplement. The recommended daily dose is 25-50 mg of zinc. Learn more about the beneficial properties of zinc.
