Maca to treat teratozoospermia
Teratozoospermia: cause symptoms, diagnostics, natural treatment
Teratozoospermia is the condition experienced by men who produce sperm rich in deformed spermatozoa.
A sperm in which the spermatozoa predominate without malformations is fundamental for reproductive purposes; therefore, those who suffer from teratozoospermia - especially when it is severe - cannot or have severe difficulty having children.
Causes and risk factors for teratozoospermia include conditions such as varicocele, genital infections, testicular cancer, testicular trauma, smoking, drug use, alcohol abuse, severe fever, anti-cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, diabetes, etc. However, it is worth noting that in many situations teratozoospermia is due to unknown factors. To solve the problem of teratozoospermia, it is essential to cure its triggering causes, found during the diagnosis.

Brief overview of what spermatozoa are:
Spermatozoa are the male gametes, that is, the cells that, in humans, are responsible for reproductive function, once they meet female cells with the same job (eggs).
Produced by the testes (male gonads), during so-called spermatogenesis, sperm are very small cellular elements (5-7 micrometers, the diameter, and 70 micrometers maximum, the length) and with a structure very particular, which includes:
• A head, containing the cell nucleus and the acrosome;
• An intermediate portion, rich in mitochondria;
• A tail, equipped with mobility and called flagellum.
The particular morphology of sperm is fundamental to the reproductive process, as it allows them to meet and merge with an egg in the female genital system.
What is teratozoospermia?
Teratozoospermia is the name for sperm alteration, characterized by the presence of a large number of malformed spermatozoa.
Teratozoospermia is a condition of considerable interest in men who wish to have children, because a large number of poorly formed sperm are associated with a decrease in male fertility (male infertility).
WHO definition of teratozoospermia
According to what was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010, a man suffers from teratozoospermia when, in the sperm produced following a classic ejaculation, the spermatozoa of normal morphology are lower than 4%.
Translated, this means that:
• A man with at least 4% of sperm with a normal morphology cannot be considered to be affected by teratozoospermia;
• A man, in whose ejaculation the percentage of malformed sperm is greater than 96%, is a carrier of teratozoospermia.
Curiously, before 2010, the WHO was of another opinion on teratozoospermia and believed, on the basis of medical knowledge of the time, that a male individual suffered from the aforementioned sperm alteration when, in the ejaculate, the percentage of spermatozoa of normal morphology, it was less than 14%.
Causes
In most cases, teratozoospermia depends on unknown and unidentifiable causes; in other circumstances, however, its trigger is recognizable and may consist of:
• Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy;
• Use of drugs that interfere with testosterone or GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) and, therefore, with the production of morphologically normal sperm;
• A genital infection, i.e. an infection of one of these organs in which the semen and seminal fluid (prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymis and urethra) flow regularly;
• Testicular trauma or testicular disease, such as testicular cancer or hydrocele;
• Varicocele: It is a pathological alteration of the testicular (or spermatic) veins, as a result of which the latter appear dilated and one or both testicles are swollen;
• Meningitis;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• A severe febrile state or the consequences of a severe febrile state;
• Abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs (eg hashish, marijuana, etc.);
• Smoke.
Symptoms and complications
Teratozoospermia is an asymptomatic condition, that is, it does not cause symptoms; this absence of symptoms does not however exclude its possible association with a certain symptomatic image, at the moment when the origin of the problem is a typically symptomatic condition (for example in men suffering from a genital infection, a possible teratozoospermia is adds to disorders such as fever, burning on urination, smelly urine, etc.).
Complications
As expected, teratozoospermia affects a man's fertility and this can prevent the affected person from having children.
When to consult a doctor?
A man with teratozoospermia should contact a doctor, especially a urologist or an andrologist, when:
• It is his intention to have children, but the alteration of the sperm from which he suffers represents an obstacle to this intention;
• He manifests an associated symptomatic picture which considerably affects his quality of life. In such circumstances, the cause of teratozoospermia is a clinically relevant condition that deserves special attention and appropriate treatment.
Diagnostic
The diagnosis of teratozoospermia requires an examination called a spermiogram.
The spermiogram is a laboratory investigation which allows us to observe a series of important characteristics of a semen sample, with the main aim of establishing the degree of fertility of the man "owner" of the aforementioned sample.
The characteristics of sperm, observed by spermiogram, include:
• Sperm viscosity,
• Liquefaction of sperm,
• Sperm volume,
• The number and morphology of sperm e
• Vitality and motility of sperm.
Once the presence of teratozoospermia has been noted, the next step is to look for the causes responsible for the altered morphology of the spermatozoa; this research may require the performance of various diagnostic tests, including instrumental tests.
Basic rules for obtaining a reliable spermogram
For the result of a spermogram to be reliable, compliance with certain rules preparatory to the aforementioned laboratory examination is fundamental; in more detail, these preparatory rules are as follows:
• Complete abstinence from sexual activity within 3-5 days before the examination;
• Ejaculation obtained exclusively by masturbation;
• Before masturbation, ensure adequate hygiene of the hands and penis;
• Provide for the collection of all the sperm produced (therefore including the one for which the penis must be pressed, after the main emissions);
• Recover in a clean place;
• For collection, use a suitable, sterile container (eg urine containers);
• Hermetically close the container used to avoid accidental loss of the collected semen sample;
• After collecting the semen sample, send it to the testing laboratory as soon as possible (within 30 to 60 minutes), avoiding thermal shock. Simplifying everything is the increasingly common possibility of collecting the sperm sample directly in a bathroom in the analysis laboratory;
• Inform the personnel of the health laboratory of the analysis of any therapy or illness followed or occurred during the last three months;
• Inform the health laboratory staff of the analysis of any breach of any of the above preparatory rules, in order to understand whether or not it is necessary to repeat the procedure for taking semen samples.
What should normal sperm look like?
A sperm is morphologically normal when:
• The head is oval, it measures between 5 and 10 micrometers long, and its main components (cell nucleus and acrosome) are clearly distinguished from each other;
• The intermediate part is linear, opposite the acrosome and at least one and a half times longer than the head;
• The tail is the thinnest part of the entire male gamete, is no less than 50 micrometers long and is mobile.
Tests to find the causes of teratozoospermia
The search for the causes of teratozoospermia always begins with an objective examination and an anamnesis; therefore, also on the basis of what emerges from these two tests which have just been mentioned, it can be continued with: a blood and urine test, a sperm culture, an ultrasound of the testicles, an ultrasound of the lower abdomen, etc.
Therapy
Teratozoospermia therapy focuses on healing or eliminating the triggering factor; it is clear that such an approach (treatment of the trigger) is possible when, at the origin of the malformation of the spermatozoa, there is a very recognizable cause.
Example of treatment for teratozoospermia due to a clearly recognizable cause
In men with teratozoospermia due to a genital infection, it will be the cure of the latter to represent the remedy against the high number of morphologically abnormal sperm.
Natural remedies for teratozoospermia: healthy and balanced diet
According to reports by several experts, it would be beneficial for men with teratozoospermia - because it would improve the quality of spermatogenesis - a healthy and balanced diet, which gives ample space to the consumption of fruits and vegetables (two sources of antioxidants) and that of foods rich in omega-3s (e.g. fish).
1- Maca
The antioxidant power and polyendocrine value of Maca (Lepidium Meyenii Walp), an Andean perennial, have always been known to Peruvian populations: Maca, known as a fertility plant, is rich in vitamins (B1, B2, B12, C, E, A), minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese, etc.) important for the protection of the sperm nucleus, carbohydrates (mainly fructose) important source of energy for sperm, aromatic isothiocyanates known for their ability to stimulate libido, as well as essential amino acids, flavonoids, tannins, etc.
Its polarized form (LMWP) is an excellent adjuvant in the treatment of infertility because polarization makes it immediately recognizable and usable for the body. In all the studies carried out, it has been shown that taking Maca does not constitute an improvement in the parameters of the spermiogram, but increases the fertilizing power of the sperm.
2- Omega 3
-WALNUT OIL
"It is the edible oil richest in good fats." It contains about 13%. It is excellent for flavoring raw or cooked vegetables, for enriching meat or cheese dishes and in desserts. It is sold in small packages (it deteriorates easily) and must be kept in the refrigerator, "suggests the nutritionist.
-PORTULACA
Portulaca is an edible herb rich in vitamins. Among the plants with green leaves is the one with the highest content of Omega 3.
“Eat it steamed or sautéed, but also raw. Thus, you considerably reduce oxalates, substances which do not favor the assimilation of calcium ", explains the expert.
-ALGAE
Wakame, spirulina, nori, kelp, dulse, arame, hiziki. Here are the algae which represent a real mine of beneficial properties for the body. “Thanks to the good fats they contain, they are good for the arteries and the heart. To optimize the absorption of Omega 3, season them with extra virgin olive oil. The monounsaturated fatty acids in which our local dressing is rich promote their assimilation by the body ", explains the expert.
In addition, they have detoxifying powers. Additions as an ingredient to smoothies, for example, help remove waste.
-FLAXSEED OIL AND SEEDS ARE THE RICHEST VEGETABLE SOURCE OF OMEGA 3
Oil and flax seeds are among the richest vegetable sources of omega 3: 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil provides more than 6 grams of omega 3, while 30 grams of flaxseed contain 3,2 grams. The oil can be consumed to season vegetables, legumes or as a dietary supplement, it is very delicate and should not be exposed to light or heat. Instead, flaxseed must be ground to be assimilated by the body and can be eaten in salads, soups or cereals.
Teratozoospermia, infertility and assisted reproduction in vitro
For some time, men wishing to have children but unable to have them because they suffer from teratozoospermia can count on a particular technique of assisted reproduction in vitro, called ICSI or intracytoplasmic injection.
Without going into too much detail, the ICSI provides for the specific collection, from a sample of ejaculate, of spermatozoa of normal morphology (as well as mobile, viable, etc.), the selection of one of them and its inoculation, in vitro, into an ovum (which clearly belongs to the partner of the "owner" of the ejaculate sample).
Currently, ICSI is one of the most effective unconventional in vitro fertilization techniques, usable by men suffering from teratozoospermia problems and avid for fatherhood.
